With policymakers aggressively targeting persistent inflation and signaling near-term tightening, a quarter-point rate increase in October is favored.
At the September gathering, monetary policymakers raised the target range to 3.75%-4.00% and clearly signaled that further tightening remains appropriate before year-end. Sixteen of eighteen meeting participants projected at least one additional hike during 2026, driven by higher core inflation and resilient economic momentum. Major Wall Street institutions have swiftly shifted their base cases toward consecutive action at the late-October session rather than waiting until the end of the year. The principal counterweight comes from institutions projecting that the Fed will prefer to evaluate additional data until December, when updated Summary of Economic Projections are published. A small minority within the committee also favored remaining on hold. Nevertheless, official communications emphasize that recent inflation prints have not improved underlying trends and that policy remains insufficiently restrictive, leaving an October rate increase with strong momentum heading into the meeting.
