Late-August forecasts cluster comfortably above 20,000, so an August U.S. payroll gain above 20,000 is likely with meaningful uncertainty.
Most late-August estimates place payroll growth comfortably above 20,000, with several clustered between 55,000 and 80,000. Falling unemployment claims and the view that unusual sector declines exaggerated July's weakness support a rebound. However, July lost jobs, recent payroll growth has hovered near the threshold, and one prominent estimate remains below it. A narrow miss therefore remains a meaningful risk, but the pre-release evidence supports an August gain above 20,000.
